Election Scandal Escalates: Police Report Filed in Fiji

The situation surrounding Barbara Malimali has escalated significantly, as Ana Mataiciwa, the Supervisor of Elections, has filed a police report against the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). This report was submitted on November 28, 2024, to Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, and it includes serious allegations such as abuse of office, as well as intimidation and harassment of witnesses.

This incident is connected to a current inquiry by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into Malimali. Furthermore, an investigative Commission of Inquiry is scrutinizing her appointment. The CID is also looking into claims of abuse of office during Malimali’s time as chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

Commissioner Chew confirmed that the report has been acknowledged and investigations are in progress. Mataiciwa explained her decision to file the report stemmed from communications received from the Secretary to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) and the Chief Registrar’s Office, both of which prompted her to address allegations made by Malimali, which included claims that Mataiciwa assisted in her arrest.

In her defense, Mataiciwa argued that Malimali, who is regarded as a crucial witness in the CID investigation, is engaging in harassment and intimidation through her actions. Additionally, Francis Puleiwai, a former Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, has submitted a complaint against Malimali, alleging misuse of her powers to implement a stop departure order earlier this year. Chew has referred this case to the CID as well.

At the moment, efforts to reach Malimali for comments have been unsuccessful.

This unfolding situation highlights the complexities involved in governance and oversight in Fiji, and while it may appear contentious, it could also pave the way for greater accountability within public offices, ensuring that such matters are addressed with transparency.

In summary, this case illustrates the intricate dynamics between governmental bodies and highlights the importance of proper conduct in public office. With investigations underway, there is hope that clarity and justice will prevail, enhancing trust in Fiji’s election oversight processes.
