Election Promises Under Fire: Where Are the Municipal Elections?

Parveen Kumar, an opposition Member of Parliament, raised concerns about the government’s commitment to holding municipal elections within the promised timeframe of 100 days or six months. Speaking during the discussion on the Rakiraki Town Council’s Annual Report for 2019, Kumar emphasized that Fijians were assured of these elections prior to and during the last elections, a promise that fostered trust and led to their votes. He questioned the government’s failure to uphold this promise and referred to it as a “total lie,” suggesting it contradicts Electoral Act 116 (4C).

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa responded by affirming that local government elections will take place. He expressed surprise at Kumar’s inquiry, noting that the question had been posed in a previous parliamentary session while Kumar was absent. Nalumisa reiterated his commitment to holding the elections and assured that they will be scheduled.
