Almost 23 months after the 2022 General Elections, there has been little progress reported regarding the investigations into the controversial vote counting “glitch” that occurred during the election process.
In a statement made earlier this year, the Electoral Commission expressed understanding about delays, acknowledging that there are government protocols that need to be adhered to.
Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, speaking at a forum focused on cybercrime and electronic evidence in the Pacific Islands at Shangri-La Yanuca Island in Fiji, mentioned that the investigation report requires additional review in light of ongoing developments.
“I have had discussions with the Committee of the Electoral Commission and I anticipate another meeting with them, as well as with the Supervisor of Elections, very soon,” said Mr. Turaga. He highlighted that they have made some initial findings during their discussions, which will need to be explored further. “We can only fully disclose information after Cabinet is briefed,” he added.
This ongoing investigation underscores the importance of transparency and accountability within electoral processes. Though the timeline has been extended, the government appears to be taking steps to ensure that the issues are addressed comprehensively.
In summary, while the delay is concerning, it is encouraging to see that the Ministry is actively engaging with the Electoral Commission to seek resolution. This process may ultimately lead to enhancements in the electoral system, fostering greater public confidence in future elections.
