Elderly Suspect Held as Troubling Details Emerge in Rape Case

A 69-year-old man accused of raping a 10-year-old girl earlier this year has been ordered to remain in custody until issues related to his relocation are resolved. The man faces charges of rape and sexual assault involving a minor, whom he was referred to as “grandfather” by the victim.

The case was addressed by Justice Dane Tuiqereqere at the High Court in Suva, concerning the alleged crime that took place on May 5. State prosecutor Katarina Dugan noted that the State is not opposing bail; however, the proposed sureties were deemed unsuitable. The first surety is the accused’s 21-year-old unemployed niece, and the second is also a relative.

Dugan explained that the accused’s family is still deliberating on his proposed relocation. Justice Tuiqereqere emphasized the need for the accused to have legal assistance for both his substantive and bail matters. Legal Aid lawyer Severo Ravu has agreed to serve as the duty solicitor for the accused.

Both parties have been granted a week to communicate and resolve the surety concerns. Dugan has submitted full disclosures, and the defense has been provided three weeks to advise their client on how to plead. The bail application will be reviewed on October 1, and the plea will be recorded on October 18.
