EFL’s Talent Exodus: Can Fiji’s Energy Sector Turn the Tide?

Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has faced significant challenges in recent years, with over 300 employees, primarily from its technical staff, departing the company within a three-year span. The chair of EFL, Rokoseru Nabalarua, acknowledges that while many of these employees have sought better opportunities elsewhere, the organization is increasingly viewed as a training ground for workers who eventually migrate.

Nabalarua shared insights on the situation during discussions about recruitment efforts, noting that new hires consist mostly of apprentices. While he believes that salary issues are not the root cause of the employee turnover, the company is actively exploring various strategies to enhance employee retention. He commented, “We just have to keep. I think the important thing is what we need to put in place to retain our people. So we need to change the focus.”

Interestingly, Nabalarua pointed out that living abroad may not always offer the financial advantages that it appears to promise, sharing instances of former employees who returned after realizing that the savings while working overseas were minimal compared to their expenses.

Newly appointed Chief Executive Fatiaki Gibson faces the task of addressing this ongoing problem. With emphasis on cultural change and retention initiatives, Gibson aims to secure the company’s skilled workforce for the continued development of Fiji. He expressed optimism that by creating a more supportive environment, EFL could not only retain its talent but also foster contributions to the nation’s growth.

Additionally, this period of change at EFL aligns with broader trends observed in the Fijian labor market, where the recent tightening of migration policies in countries like Australia and New Zealand has resulted in a noticeable decline in the exodus of Fijian workers. This could signify a potential turn in the tide for Fiji’s labor force, opening doors for local job opportunities and encouraging a healthier, more stable job market.

The steps EFL is taking, coupled with a broader easing in emigration, suggest a hopeful future for both the company and its workforce. With the right focus on retention and employee welfare, EFL can continue to be an influential entity in Fiji’s energy sector while enhancing community welfare and operational sustainability.
