EFL Targets Clean Energy: Namosi Hydro Feasibility Study Underway

Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) has announced its ongoing efforts regarding the proposed feasibility study for a hydro-electric project in Namosi. In a statement, EFL’s acting chief executive officer, Bobby Naimawi, highlighted the organization’s goal of providing clean and affordable energy solutions to Fiji, aiming for at least 90 percent of its energy needs to be met through renewable sources by 2035.

To achieve this ambitious target, EFL, with the assistance of various international development partners, is focused on identifying and developing sustainable and economically viable projects. The Namosi hydro-electric scheme is one such initiative currently under investigation, with EFL conducting a feasibility study.

Initial findings indicate that multiple small hydro-electric schemes could be established in the Namosi area, and EFL aims to build on these previous assessments. The feasibility study’s outcomes will guide EFL’s future actions.

The study will evaluate three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the required high-voltage power evacuation infrastructure to facilitate connectivity to major electricity load centers. It will explore the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and the environmental and social impacts of the proposed hydro-power facilities and related infrastructure.

The feasibility study began this year and is projected to take two years to complete.
