Education Shake-Up: Changes Ahead for Year 9 Admissions in Fiji

The Ministry of Education is set to reassess its recruitment policy for students entering Year 9 in 2025. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro announced that this evaluation is part of a broader review of the no-repeat policy, which has sparked concerns about the inadequate monitoring of students who are struggling academically.

Last year, 19,396 students took the Fiji Year Eight Examination, achieving a pass rate of 69%, translating to about 13,383 successful candidates while 6,012 did not pass. Minister Radrodro informed the legislative assembly of the necessity for this review, emphasizing that parents or guardians experiencing difficulties enrolling their children in Year 9 should reach out to local district offices for assistance.

The current approach allows every student completing Year 8 to transition automatically to Year 9, regardless of their performance. This strategy has raised concerns about students who are not adequately prepared for secondary education. The Minister highlighted the importance of evaluating past occurrences where students transitioned without passing their exams.

To address the needs of students who have not succeeded, the Ministry plans to reintroduce vocational education and training initiatives geared towards lower grade levels, starting from Year 8 or Year 9. This reflects a commitment to provide alternative pathways for students who may struggle academically, rather than leaving them without options.

This year saw a slight improvement in the pass rate, reaching 69%, which is an encouraging sign of progress. By reviewing the policies and enhancing vocational training opportunities, there is hope for better educational outcomes and more tailored support for students in Fiji.
