The Ministry of Education has reinstated interviews for Year 13 students who aspire to become teachers, marking a significant step in enhancing the selection process for future educators in Fiji. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission of Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS).
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted the necessity for a thorough selection process to attract candidates who are not only passionate but also well-qualified. This initiative is a key component of the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, aimed at fortifying partnerships between key stakeholders in education and ensuring that teacher graduates emerge equipped with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes for effective teaching across the nation.
Eligible students can apply for scholarships under the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme, which supports various Bachelor of Education programs, including specialized fields like Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts. The deadline for online applications to the TSLS is set for January 31, 2025, with successful candidates to be informed about their interview dates and venues through email and phone notifications.
This move not only reinforces the commitment to improving the quality of education in Fiji but also represents a proactive approach to nurturing future educators who are well-prepared to meet the demands of the classroom. With these measures in place, there is hope for a new generation of teachers who will contribute positively to the educational landscape in Fiji.
