The Ministry of Education has reported instances of fund misappropriation in schools to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). These cases involve educational institutions that received funding for projects but failed to provide receipts, with some projects either incomplete or never initiated.
Ilisoni Waqa, the Principal Education Officer at the Ministry of Education’s Assets and Infrastructure Services, disclosed this information. “We have referred cases for audit and FICAC is conducting interviews and requesting documents. We are assisting them by providing the evidence necessary to support their investigations and resolve these outstanding matters,” Mr. Waqa stated.
When inquired about the number of schools under investigation by FICAC, he mentioned, “I don’t have the numbers with me, but I will get back to you.” He also refrained from providing specific details about the schools involved.
In one instance at Nasoki Village, there was a request for help with completing a double-storey classroom. While Mr. Waqa confirmed that assistance was given, the school did not provide the necessary receipt documentation.
He highlighted the necessity of utilizing government funds effectively and keeping accurate records. “When funds are granted to schools, we expect them to be allocated for their intended purposes. Schools that maintain good records are more likely to receive funding for future initiatives,” Mr. Waqa noted. He urged schools to diligently keep track of receipts for any funds used for their projects.
