The issue of a shortage of primary school teachers was a significant topic discussed during the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held yesterday in Tamavua Village, Suva.
Education Minister Aseri Radrodro stated that the Ministry of Education is actively addressing this challenge. “The lack of teachers has been a persistent problem for many schools in the province. We recognize this issue and are committed to finding effective solutions,” he remarked.
Mr. Radrodro noted that the teacher shortage is a legacy problem inherited by the Coalition Government. To mitigate this, steps have been taken to recruit secondary school graduates who are willing to transition into primary education.
He emphasized that there is a particular need for teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. “We are planning to collaborate with the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLS) in the upcoming year to enhance the recruitment of teacher trainees,” he added. “Our goal is to encourage potential teachers to join this initiative and graduate in the fields where demand is greatest.”
Additionally, he inspired students in the province to strive for ambitious goals. “Think beyond your classroom. There are always opportunities available, so believe in yourself and stay focused on your aspirations, placing God at the center of your pursuits.”
