“Education Crisis: Are We Facing a Teacher Shortage?”

The shortage of primary school teachers was a major topic of discussion at the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held yesterday in Tamavua Village, Suva, as raised to the Ministry of Education.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro acknowledged the issue, stating that many schools in the province are facing a lack of teachers, and the ministry is actively working to provide support. “It is a legacy issue inherited by the Coalition Government, linked to the shortage of primary school teachers. We have initiated efforts to recruit secondary school teacher graduates who are open to teaching at the primary level,” Mr. Radrodro explained.

He noted that there is a specific demand for teachers specializing in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. “We are addressing this concern through collaboration with the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board (TSLS) in the upcoming calendar year to enhance the recruitment of teacher trainees,” he added. “We hope to encourage them to join this initiative and become teachers in the areas where they are most needed.”

The minister also motivated students in the province to aspire for greatness. “Dream beyond the walls of the classroom. Opportunities are always available, so don’t doubt yourself as you work towards achieving your goals. Stay focused on your objectives and always put God first in everything you pursue,” he encouraged.
