The Minister for Education, Aseri Radrodro, has emphasized the necessity of reviewing the Education Act of 1966 in light of the rising number of school dropouts in the country. During a discussion yesterday, he expressed concerns regarding the limitations the current Act imposes on the ministry, educators, and associated committees in addressing issues related to students who either become uneducated or drop out of school.
Mr. Radrodro highlighted that the review of the Act was among topics discussed at last year’s Denarau Education Summit in Nadi, alongside six other key issues. He pointed out that the existing legislation restricts the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) role and accountability for students once they leave school, effectively transferring that responsibility to other government departments.
The Minister acknowledged that school dropouts are not a new phenomenon and have been a persistent issue for previous administrations. He stated that finding solutions would not be an overnight process and would require collaboration among various stakeholders, not just the government.
“It necessitates extensive dialogue and cooperation with all party stakeholders; addressing school dropouts is a collective responsibility that involves parents, guardians, community members, and religious organizations. It takes an entire community to support a child’s education,” he stated.
Furthermore, Mr. Radrodro remarked on the need to improve communication between settlements, villages, teachers, and parents to ensure that students’ absences are addressed promptly.
On the topic of the repeal of the no transfer policy, he noted that more discussions were necessary. However, the introduction of Vocational Technical Institutes aimed at assisting students who struggle academically was a positive step. He shared insights gained from a recent visit to New Zealand, where such institutions provide students with practical skill training in fields like construction, catering, and auto-mechanics while they continue their education.
He underscored the importance of offering students diverse opportunities and platforms to equip them with the skills necessary to prepare for their futures.
