Electoral Commission (EC) chair Barbara Malimali has urged the public to exercise patience as the EC addresses an appeal from Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj regarding the deregistration of FijiFirst. In a media briefing, she indicated that the hearing is currently in progress and that the EC is required to publish its findings once the hearing concludes.
“The Electoral Commission is doing its utmost to ensure fairness to both sides, and while I understand that the public is eager for updates, we will keep you informed,” she stated.
Malimali explained that a press release will be issued after the conclusion of the hearing to share their findings, apologizing for the wait that is necessary to ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
She emphasized the importance of taking the required time to reach the correct decision, saying, “We prefer to take time rather than make mistakes.”
The EC has conducted preliminary hearings where both sides have presented their submissions and sought additional time to address the matter. Malimali noted the commission’s commitment to listening to all viewpoints, which includes input from both Maharaj and the Registrar of Political Parties.
Malimali acknowledged that while the delay may frustrate some, it is essential for the commission to exercise due diligence to avoid any missteps during the process.
