Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has announced the successful early disbursement of Back-to-School Support payments for the 2025 academic year, enabling families to receive financial aid ahead of the previously scheduled date of January 15. This proactive move provides parents with an additional two and a half weeks to get their children ready for school, which begins on January 27, 2025.
The program received an impressive 208,673 applications, with 200,176 successfully processed, amounting to a significant payout of $40.4 million. Only 8,313 applications remain on hold, pending Year-12 exam results, which are essential for students aiming to officially enroll in Year 13.
The $200 support per child is aimed at alleviating financial burdens associated with essential school expenses such as uniforms, shoes, school bags, and stationery. Parents and guardians can access the funds through digital platforms like MPAiSA and MyCASH, or collect them at Post Fiji locations. For families in maritime areas, funds can be obtained by presenting the child’s student ID at the nearest Post Fiji agency.
This initiative highlights the Coalition Government’s commitment to supporting families, particularly those with household incomes below $50,000. Historically, the Back-to-School Support program has benefited around 200,000 students annually, involving an overall investment of approximately $130 million in educational assistance.
The early payment not only provides critical financial relief during the back-to-school season but also reflects the government’s dedication to fostering educational readiness. It serves as a hopeful sign for families, ensuring that children are equipped with the necessary resources as they embark on a new academic year filled with potential and opportunities.
The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education extend their gratitude to school heads, teachers, and parents for their cooperation throughout the application process. This collaboration is vital in reinforcing the community’s commitment to education and supporting families in navigating the costs associated with sending their children back to school.
