Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, has announced that the Back-to-School Support payments for the upcoming 2025 academic year have been successfully processed and distributed ahead of schedule. Originally set to begin on January 15, 2025, the payments were expedited, providing families with two and a half weeks to prepare their children for the new school year starting on January 27.
The initiative received a total of 208,673 applications, out of which 200,176 have been processed, resulting in a significant total payout of $40.4 million. However, 8,313 applications are currently on hold, awaiting Year-12 exam results necessary for enrollment into Year 13.
Parents and guardians can access the $200 support per child through various platforms, including MPAiSA, MyCASH, and Post Fiji outlets. These funds are designed to assist in covering essential school-related expenses such as uniforms, school bags, shoes, and stationery. For families residing in maritime areas, funds can be collected at the nearest Post Fiji agency with the child’s student ID as proof of eligibility.
This Back-to-School Support program is part of the Coalition Government’s broader strategy to alleviate the financial burden on families, especially those with household incomes below $50,000. Historically, the initiative has benefited around 200,000 students each year, with the government investing approximately $130 million annually in educational assistance.
The early disbursement of financial aid not only relieves immediate financial stress but also underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring educational readiness among students. It serves as a positive signal for families as they navigate back-to-school expenses, ensuring that children are well-equipped to embark on a new academic year filled with promise and opportunities. The collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education has also been crucial, emphasizing the community’s commitment to education.
