In the latest development ahead of the Vodafone Basketball Fiji Cup, defending champions Dynamic Reds have signalled their intent to extend a remarkable run — aiming for a sixth consecutive title — buoyed by an extended preparation period and a youth infusion into their squad. The tournament is scheduled to run from the 4th to the 6th of next month in Suva.
Club representative Vika Kuboutawa said the team’s early start to training this year has had a marked effect on readiness compared with past campaigns. “So we’ve been training since the beginning of this year, and past years we’ve only been given like a month in advance to train. But this year we’ve been training since the beginning of this year. We’ve just had a competition a couple months ago,” she said, stressing that the longer build-up has produced positive results on and off the court.
A notable element of this year’s Dynamic Reds roster is the inclusion of five new players straight from high school. Kuboutawa framed the youth presence as part of the club’s ongoing commitment to women’s empowerment in basketball, saying the integration of younger athletes creates pathways for women and girls to learn, grow and remain engaged with the sport. The decision to bring in high school talent both broadens the club’s base and provides valuable competitive exposure for emerging players ahead of the Cup.
The shift from last-minute preparation windows to a sustained training program represents the clearest change in the lead-up to this year’s Cup. Kuboutawa pointed to the team’s recent competition experience as a practical stepping stone that has allowed coaches and players to test combinations and build match fitness — advantages she believes will be critical as the Reds seek to maintain their dominance.
Dynamic Reds’ pursuit of a sixth straight Vodafone Basketball Fiji Cup title will place them under intense scrutiny from challengers eager to end the streak. While details about the full tournament draw, participating teams and match schedules were not announced in the club’s release, the three-day event in Suva is expected to draw the island’s leading women’s sides, and the Reds will enter as favourites based on their recent record.
Beyond on-court ambitions, Kuboutawa emphasised the broader goals for the club: to attract more women and girls into basketball and to provide structured development that goes beyond a single tournament. The addition of high school players is part of that longer-term vision, creating role models within the squad and showing a pipeline from schools into competitive club basketball.
With the Cup dates locked in and the Dynamic Reds reporting stronger preparation than in prior years, attention will turn to whether the extra months of training and fresh youth talent are enough to secure another trophy. The competition in Suva from the 4th to the 6th of next month will provide the first definitive test of the Reds’ revamped campaign.
