Dry Spell in Fiji: What to Expect This October?

The dry weather currently affecting the North is anticipated to continue until the end of October, as stated by Misaele Funaki, director of the Fiji Meteorological Service. He mentioned that the dry season typically lasts through October, with a transition to the wetter season usually starting in November and lasting until April.

“This pattern is normal for these months,” Funaki noted. His remarks come amidst reports of village and community water sources running dry due to the extended dry conditions in the area.

“While we do expect some rainfall during this period, it will likely be minimal,” he added. Funaki indicated that many regions may experience precipitation levels below the average for this time of year.

He clarified that the current situation is not deemed a drought since some water sources have still maintained adequate levels despite the limited rainfall. “There are many factors that must be evaluated before a region can be classified as experiencing drought,” he commented.

Funaki also indicated that he plans to provide an update to the government regarding the ongoing dry spell in the Northern Division.
