Drunk Fans Spark Chaos at Fiji Rugby Event

Tiko Matawalu, operations manager of the Fiji Rugby Union, has spoken out regarding a recent altercation at the Ra Rugby Union competition at the Ra Sports Ground last Saturday. The brawl, which was recorded and shared on social media, involved fans from two competing teams.

Matawalu pointed to intoxicated spectators as the primary cause of the incident. He stated that allowing drunk individuals into the venue contributed significantly to the chaos. “The issue arose from drunkards being permitted into the facility, which led to the problem,” he explained. “The incident occurred when team members chased after intoxicated fans who were causing disruptions.”

The Fiji Sports Council, which oversees the facility, is also conducting its investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future. “The Council has initiated an inquiry, as we need to address this moving forward related to events held at the venue. Such incidents are unacceptable and should not occur,” Matawalu added.

He highlighted the necessity for enhanced security measures and the presence of law enforcement during events. “It is crucial to have law enforcement in place and to ensure strict security protocols are adhered to, preventing supporters and fans from bringing alcohol into the venue or attending inebriated,” he stated.
