Five individuals narrowly avoided serious injuries in a motor vehicle accident that took place in Saqani early this morning. The Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, reported that the driver of the vehicle is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The accident occurred in Delaivatu shortly after 2 AM when the driver allegedly lost control of the car, causing it to veer off the road. Although one of the four passengers was taken to Savusavu Hospital for precautionary treatment, the remaining occupants were treated at the scene and subsequently released.
SSP Divuana emphasized the dangers of drinking and driving, calling it a significant threat to all road users. He urged drivers to heed warnings regarding alcohol consumption before getting behind the wheel, especially as the festive season approaches. Since the beginning of the year until mid-November, authorities have arrested 272 drivers for driving under the influence, highlighting the ongoing risk that intoxicated driving poses to both the drivers themselves and other innocent road users.
As the holiday season is often celebrated with parties that involve alcohol, SSP Divuana is calling for a shift in mindset towards road safety. He reminded everyone—drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike—that road safety is a shared responsibility. “Choosing to drink and drive or overindulge ultimately leads to a loss of focus and coordination,” he stated, advocating for heightened awareness to prevent further accidents and loss of life.
This incident serves as a vital reminder of the importance of responsible behavior on the roads, particularly during festive celebrations. By adopting safer practices, it is possible to enjoy the season while ensuring the safety of everyone on the road.
Overall, the message is clear: safety should always come first, and by making conscious choices, everyone can contribute to a safer environment during the festive period.
