Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua has raised alarming concerns about the devastating impact of illicit drugs on young children in Fiji. He highlighted a troubling trend where some parents are reportedly involving their children in drug trafficking activities. This phenomenon, which was thought to be confined to urban areas, is now infiltrating rural communities as well.
During a recent address to the Labasa Rotary Club, Mr. Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of community involvement in the fight against drug abuse, stating that while the Government plays a crucial role in ensuring public welfare and security, the community must take the lead in addressing this urgent issue. He remarked, “The community must take the lead because the community bears the children and the people, not the Government.”
The minister expressed that the detrimental effects of drugs on Fiji’s societal fabric are profound, urging for immediate action rather than mere discussions. He reiterated the need for collaboration between the Government and the community to combat this crisis effectively. Strategies should include stopping the distribution of drugs, rehabilitating affected individuals, holding drug dealers accountable, and prosecuting those who exploit others through drug trafficking.
