Law enforcement agencies are being urged to conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify regions within Fiji that are experiencing drug-related issues, as stated by Sireli Leweniqila, a representative from Udu district. During the Macuata Provincial Council meeting held at Sasa Village near Labasa Town, Leweniqila highlighted that some villages and settlements remain largely untouched by drug problems.
Leweniqila acknowledged that communities closer to urban areas typically have greater access to information about drugs, making them susceptible to both victimization and involvement in drug-related activities. “I recognize that these locations may have differing levels of exposure to drug issues,” he noted.
He emphasized the importance of law enforcement partnering with traditional leaders in affected areas following the completion of the assessment. Such collaboration is crucial since the dynamics of drug-related issues can vary significantly from one village to another. Furthermore, he advocated for strict penalties in cases of drug possession, consumption, or trafficking to deter potential offenders.
Leweniqila expressed concern about children moving to cities for work or education, as they may encounter drugs and make regrettable decisions for quick financial gain. Citing methamphetamine as a critical global concern, he reiterated that Fiji is not immune to its effects, despite its small size. To combat this, he urged for enhanced border control measures, both on land and sea, to protect future generations.
Concluding his remarks, he underscored that while Fiji is often affectionately termed the “Friendly Islands,” it is vital for the government and law enforcement to introduce more stringent laws that communicate the seriousness of drug-related crimes and their repercussions.
This proactive approach by Leweniqila reflects a commitment to safeguarding communities from the drug menace, showcasing a hopeful determination to foster a healthier environment for future generations. By addressing these issues collaboratively and decisively, Fiji can work toward being a stronger and safer nation for all its citizens.
