Police in the Northern Division arrested five individuals, including a 50-year-old businessman, in connection with drug-related offenses over the last two days. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, provided this update, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat drug activity in the community.
The arrests began on Friday, December 27, in Naweni Village, Savusavu, where authorities discovered branches of leaves thought to be marijuana hanging within a residence. A male suspect was taken into custody, and the dried leaves have been confiscated pending further analysis.
On Saturday, the police conducted additional operations in Labasa, resulting in the arrest of four individuals. Among them was the 50-year-old businessman, who was found with two sachets of dried leaves wrapped in aluminum foil, suspected to be marijuana. Additionally, a 20-year-old male student from Batinivuruwai, Bua, was apprehended with another sachet wrapped similarly.
At Naduna Settlement, a 55-year-old farmer and a 35-year-old woman were also arrested after being found in possession of a sealed plastic bag, a sachet, and a jar containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana. The police emphasized that all seized items have been sent for analysis, with results pending.
Assistant Commissioner Driu assured the public that police efforts will persist, especially with ongoing drug raids and operations throughout the festive season.
