Police in the Northern Division recently arrested five individuals, including a 50-year-old businessman, in connection with drug-related offenses. The arrests took place over the course of two days and were confirmed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu.
On December 27, law enforcement discovered what appeared to be marijuana leaves in Naweni Village, Savusavu, leading to the arrest of a male suspect. The dried leaves have been collected and are currently undergoing analysis.
The following day, four more individuals were taken into custody in various locations within Labasa. Among them was a 50-year-old businessman found with two sachets of what is believed to be marijuana, wrapped in aluminum foil. Additionally, a 20-year-old male student from Batinivuruwai, Bua, was found with another sachet under similar circumstances. In Naduna Settlement, a 55-year-old farmer and a 35-year-old woman were discovered with a variety of containers holding dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
All seized items have been sent for testing, and the police have pledged to intensify drug raids and special operations during the festive season to combat illegal drug activity.
In light of these developments, it’s a hopeful reminder that law enforcement is taking active steps to address drug-related issues within communities, particularly during a time when the risk of substance abuse could be heightened. This commitment to enhancing public safety and maintaining community wellbeing is commendable as the police continue their efforts.
