Drua’s Winning Strategy: Can Home Success Translate to Away Games?

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua team is gearing up for the 2025 Super Rugby season, with seven home matches on their schedule. To improve their chances of success in away games, the team aims to establish a winning streak starting from their very first home match. This point was stressed by Mark Evans, the team’s chief executive officer, during a recent interview.

Evans pointed out the noticeable gap between the team’s home and away performance, stating, “It’s plainly obvious, the contrast between our home form and our away form is very marked.” He added that it is common for younger teams to secure victories at home before finding success in away games.

He acknowledged that several players who have moved on from the Drua have been winning away matches consistently with the Flying Fijians national team. “We’ve got so many players in the Flying Fijians now, and they’re winning away games quite regularly,” he noted.

Evans expressed confidence that the Drua’s inconsistent away performances would improve over time since most of the players are the same. “I think it’s probably only a matter of time. I don’t think it’s a big psychological block or anything,” he said, emphasizing that this issue hasn’t affected their national team play.

In the previous 2024 season, the Drua faced challenges, losing eight away games in addition to two home matches.
