Fitness is a primary focus for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua during their off-season training program. Head coach Glen Jackson emphasized this priority in an interview. “We can’t win Super Rugby if you’re not fit,” he stated, highlighting the importance of physical conditioning.
Jackson explained that strength and conditioning coach Master Naca Cawanibuka and his team have ample opportunity to enhance the players’ fitness levels. He noted significant progress in the team’s fitness, despite the demanding nature of the training.
After enjoying a break following last season, the players are now adjusting to the intensity of their workouts. Jackson mentioned that while the Flying Fijians are gearing up for their November tour, the developmental players are returning well but are feeling the effects of rigorous training after week and a half.
The off-season training has been further reinforced by the addition of experienced coaches Tim Sampson and Chris Gibbes. Jackson expressed his satisfaction with their involvement, explaining their familiarity with the Super Rugby environment is a great asset for the team.
Gibbes, who was previously an assistant coach for the Hurricanes, has taken on the role of forwards coach. He has a commendable track record, having led Wellington to premiership promotion and coached various international teams. Sampson has experience as the head coach of Western Force and as an assistant for Melbourne Rebels, where he helped the team reach the Super Rugby quarterfinals. He serves as the Drua’s attack coach.
“Both Gibbes and Sampson are quick to learn player names and have effectively implemented our strategies from the start,” Jackson remarked about their contributions. “They are motivated and enjoy being part of the organization.”
Additionally, the Drua is considering a trip to Kadavu in December to facilitate training, community outreach, and team bonding, with Jackson noting the importance of connecting off the field as well as on it.
