The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua team is gearing up for the 2025 Super Rugby season, during which they will host seven home matches. In light of this, the team aims to establish a winning streak from their very first home game to bolster their chances of securing victories in away matches as well.
Mark Evans, the team’s CEO, highlighted this goal in a recent interview. He acknowledged the stark difference between the team’s performance at home versus away, saying, “It’s plainly obvious, the contrast between our home form and our away form is very marked.” Evans added that it is common for younger teams to find success at home first before improving their away game.
He pointed out that many current players, who have transitioned from the Drua to the Flying Fijians, have consistently won away matches. “We’ve got so many players in the Flying Fijians now, and they’re winning away games quite regularly,” he noted.
Evans expressed optimism that the inconsistent away performances of the Drua would stabilize over time, given that many of the players are the same. He remarked, “I think it’s probably only a matter of time. I don’t think it’s a big psychological block or anything. Otherwise, it would apply when they play for the national team as well. And it doesn’t seem to have applied.”
In the previous 2024 season, the Drua faced challenges, losing eight away games and two at home.
