The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua team is set to play seven home matches in the upcoming 2025 Super Rugby season, and they are keen to establish a winning streak from their first home game. This approach could significantly improve their chances of winning away games as well.
Mark Evans, the team’s CEO, made this statement during a recent interview. He acknowledged the clear difference in performance between the Drua’s home and away games, stating, “It’s plainly obvious, the contrast between our home form and our away form is very marked.” He pointed out that for a young team, it is typical to start by securing wins at home.
Evans also highlighted that many players have moved on from the franchise to join the Flying Fijians, a team that has demonstrated success in away games. “We’ve got so many players in the Flying Fijians now, and they’re winning away games quite regularly,” he noted. He expressed optimism that the Drua would soon overcome their inconsistent away performance, as many of the same players already excel on the international stage.
“I think it’s probably only a matter of time. I don’t think it’s a big psychological block or anything. Otherwise, it would apply when they play for the national team as well. And it doesn’t seem to have applied,” Evans stated.
In the previous 2024 season, the Drua faced challenges, losing eight away games along with two at home. The team is determined to improve and replicate the success of its players in the national squad during the upcoming season.
