Fitness is the primary focus for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua as they embark on their off-season training program. Head coach Glen Jackson emphasized this priority during an interview, stating, “We can’t win Super Rugby if you’re not fit.” He noted that strength and conditioning coaches, including Master Naca Cawanibuka, have ample time to enhance the players’ fitness levels, and so far, there has been significant progress.
Jackson mentioned that it has been a challenging week of training for the players following a break after last season. While the Flying Fijians are preparing for an upcoming November tour, the developing players have returned in good shape but are now feeling the strain after a week and a half of intensive running.
The Drua’s off-season preparations have also been bolstered by the addition of experienced assistant coaches Tim Sampson and Chris Gibbes. Jackson expressed his satisfaction with having such skilled coaches on board. Gibbes, who was previously an assistant coach for the Hurricanes and led Wellington to the premier division in 2017, is now the forwards coach for Drua. Sampson, having served as the head coach of Western Force and assistant coach of Melbourne Rebels, where they reached the Super Rugby quarterfinal this year, is overseeing the attack.
Jackson praised Gibbes and Sampson for their understanding of the Super Rugby competition and their quick adaptation to the team. He highlighted their motivation and enthusiasm for the organization.
Additionally, the Drua is considering a trip to Kadavu in December for training, community outreach, and team bonding activities. Jackson emphasized the importance of building camaraderie both on and off the field as they work to strengthen team unity.
