Glen Jackson, the head coach of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, has expressed his desire for Meli Derenalagi to excel as the leading blindside flanker in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition. In an interview with SUNsports, Jackson explained that Derenalagi’s responsibility has been adjusted by removing him from his captaincy role to allow him to concentrate more on his gameplay. “Meli is on board with us regarding this decision so he can just focus on his rugby,” Jackson stated.
For the upcoming 2025 season, Jackson has appointed hooker Tevita Ikanivere and experienced halfback Frank Lomani as co-captains. He emphasized that both players have exhibited professionalism both on and off the field throughout their time with the team, making them suitable choices for leadership. Jackson conveyed excitement about the unique co-captain arrangement, stating, “It is a decision our coaching staff is very excited by since this is the first time we are having co-captains. This is something good for the club.”
In roster updates, some notable exclusions from the Drua squad include center Apisalome Vota, Michael Naitokani, and prop Jone Koroiduadua, who has signed with an American club in the Major League Rugby competition.
This shift in leadership could potentially bring a fresh dynamic to the team, and with Derenalagi focusing on his performance, it opens up great potential for further development not only for him but for the entire Drua squad as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
