In the eighth chapter of “The Rise of the Drua,” titled “Home at Last,” the deep emotional ties between the Drua rugby team and their dedicated fans are poignantly illustrated through the experiences of two young siblings watching a crucial match against the Crusaders.

The 10-year-old girl and her five-year-old brother embody the fervent spirit the Drua sparked in Fiji, particularly as the team returned home for their first game in Suva after enduring months of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The chapter highlights the electric atmosphere during the Drua’s homecoming in 2022, which uplifted a nation that had faced a lengthy period of despair. Thousands gathered to cheer on their team, creating a scene that celebrated both hope and unity. Drua sponsor Alex Pattison remarked on how the team’s arrival invigorated the community.

The match was intense, with Frank Lomani scoring a stunning try early on, igniting joy among a crowd of 15,000 that felt much larger. Although the Drua narrowly lost 27-24, they demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level, fostering a sense of belonging among their fans.

The chapter contrasts the unique experience of broadcasting this game with more predictable events in larger venues, emphasizing the crowd’s infectious energy and the importance of the Drua’s journey.

As the season unfolded, the Drua continued to engage their supporters, highlighted by a thrilling match against the Chiefs where they almost pulled off a remarkable comeback. The excitement surrounding their performances translated into a growing fan base, marking the team’s rise in the rugby scene.

“The Rise of the Drua” celebrates this incredible journey and the connection between the team and its supporters. The book’s launch is set to explore stories that showcase the essence of the Drua, emphasizing their influence on Fijian culture and rugby.

Written by rugby commentator Greg Clark and Norman Tasker, the book is the initiative of former Fijian Drua CEO Brian Thorburn, who is overseeing the project and its distribution to retailers and other interested parties.
