Drua’s Fitness Frenzy: Off-Season Strategies Unveiled

Fitness is a top priority for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua as they focus on their off-season training program. Head coach Glen Jackson emphasized this during an interview, stating, “We can’t win Super Rugby if you’re not fit.” He pointed out that strength and conditioning coaches, including Master Naca Cawanibuka, have a crucial opportunity to enhance the players’ fitness.

Jackson noted that the team has seen significant improvements during their training, describing the past week as challenging for the players who have recently returned from a break after the last season. He mentioned that most of the development players have come back in good shape, though they are now feeling the intensity of the training regimen.

The Drua’s off-season efforts have been enhanced by the addition of experienced assistant coaches Tim Sampson and Chris Gibbes. Jackson expressed his satisfaction, saying, “I’m pleased to have two outstanding coaches.” Gibbes, previously an assistant with the Hurricanes, is serving as the forwards coach, while Sampson, who coached Western Force until 2022, is the attack coach.

Jackson noted that both coaches are adapting well to the Fijian team, effectively learning players’ names and contributing to the team’s strategy from the start. He highlighted their motivation and enthusiasm for being a part of the Drua.

Additionally, the team is considering traveling to Kadavu in December for training and community outreach activities, aiming to strengthen team bonds both on and off the field. Jackson clarified, “It’s about bringing the team together, not only on the field but off the field as well.”
