The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua 7s team is set to compete in the Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament, taking place at Churchill Park from November 15-16. This participation marks a significant shift in the team’s preseason strategy as they aim to inject fresh energy under the guidance of new head coach Glen Jackson.

Jackson’s innovative approach includes a re-embrace of the sevens format, starting with the upcoming tournament and followed by the popular Coral Coast 7s scheduled for January. Drua CEO Mark Evans emphasized that this change is part of a larger plan to maintain player engagement and competitiveness while breaking up the lengthy preseason period.

With around 25 key players currently touring in Europe, the remaining team members have been diligently training in Fiji, taking advantage of the upcoming sevens events to enhance their skills and camaraderie. “Sevens adds a competitive edge the boys enjoy,” noted Evans, pointing out that the new format offers an exciting change for the players.

The strategy provides an excellent opportunity for those not participating in the European tour to stay in top form and diversify their training. Those who have been training in Fiji are now set for a robust preseason that will continue up until the Christmas break.

Evans expressed enthusiasm for Jackson’s forward-thinking tactics, stating, “It’s interesting, it keeps the team engaged, and the boys love playing sevens.” Looking ahead, the Drua is also contemplating participation in 10s tournaments, further enriching their preparation for the upcoming season.

This proactive approach signifies a commitment to not just maintaining but invigorating the team’s dynamic, leading to a more seasoned and cohesive unit as they gear up for competitive play.

In summary, the Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s will serve as an engaging platform for the Drua players to showcase their talent while preparing for a successful season ahead, highlighting the team’s resilience and strategic planning in the face of challenges.
