Encouraging greater interest in golf among Fiji’s youth is viewed as a key strategy for enhancing the sport’s visibility both locally and throughout the Pacific region. Shaun Hwang, the vice-president of the Fiji Golf Club, expressed this viewpoint at the club in Vatuwaqa, Suva, during a recent discussion.
Hwang emphasized the importance of engaging younger generations in sports, stating, “We need sports in the young generation. In the Pacific, we need the young people and the younger generation to join.” He highlighted the possibility for aspiring young golfers to find inspiration from established figures like Vijay Singh, a Fijian-born former world number one golfer.
“We have a successful golf player like Vijay Singh, and we have to develop on where to go,” he remarked. Hwang, who has been an avid golfer for ten years and has resided in Fiji for 28 years, frequently visits the club on weekends.
In addition, the Stableford Event competition, sponsored by Nagel Goundan, commenced yesterday, attracting 60 participants at the start of the tournament, which will continue every weekend. The weather yesterday was mostly overcast but cleared up as golfers and enthusiasts gathered at the Vatuwaqa golf club to take part.
