Dredging Hope: A New Era for Ba River and Its Communities

Australian firm Hall Contracting Ltd has been selected for the dredging project of the Ba River. This announcement was made by Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government.

Minister Nalumisa expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I am pleased to share that the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways has engaged Hall Contracting Ltd for a critical dredging project at the Ba River.” He indicated that work is set to commence shortly, highlighting the persistent issue of flooding that has hindered Ba Town’s development.

The Minister noted that flooding has consistently impacted both businesses and agriculture in Ba, disrupting lives and hindering economic growth. He explained that much of the flooding stems from the significant accumulation of silt in the Ba River, which has diminished its water discharge capacity to about half of its original capability.

The dredging project will involve clearing a 3.6-kilometer segment from the river’s mouth to the sea and the removal of 300,000 cubic meters of silt. According to Mr. Nalumisa, “These efforts will significantly enhance the river’s capacity to manage excess water, aiding in the protection of Ba Town and adjacent communities from future floods and facilitating uninterrupted development, including at Govind Park.”
