Maintenance dredging at the Denarau Marina channel is overdue, according to Port Denarau Marina CEO Cynthia Rasch. She expressed enthusiasm for the Government’s funding allocation, which was confirmed by Finance Minister Biman Prasad during the last parliamentary session. The $5.5 million designated for dredging is seen as vital for addressing flooding and enhancing infrastructure, ultimately benefiting the tourism industry.

The channel was last dredged in 2012, prompting ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Tourism and Waterways. Rasch emphasized that Port Denarau Marina is fully supportive of these developments, which are essential for ensuring the marina remains a safe and accessible hub for vessels and vital for tourism, a key component of Fiji’s economy. The marina is currently awaiting final approval for its dredging license from the Solicitor General’s office.

With future enhancement plans in mind, Rasch indicated that a press release would follow the approval of the dredging license. The marina and its stakeholders are dedicated to promoting economic growth while prioritizing environmental protection and community service.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, stated that the project is under consideration while studies are conducted to determine its specifics. He acknowledged the importance of government support for the tourism sector, emphasizing the interconnectedness of various aspects of the industry. Improved dredging would not only address vessel access issues at the marina but also provide relief in flood-prone areas like Yavusania Village.

Ditoka noted the historical flooding challenges faced by communities in the Nadi area and mentioned that dredging would work alongside other flood mitigation strategies. He confirmed plans to dredge the Nadi Riverbank near Malolo, within the town boundary, while ensuring careful consideration to prevent potential issues like saltwater intrusion. The aim is to conduct the dredging in a manner that provides solutions without causing new complications.
