The SunnyBank Dragons rugby team is leveraging their time at the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s not just for sports, but to reconnect with their cultural roots. Based in Queensland, Australia, this team, sponsored by The Lair, has garnered valuable experiences both on and off the field during their time in Fiji.

Head Coach Peter Lee remarked on the cultural enrichment gained by the players, stating, “Coming from Queensland, it has been a cultural experience for our boys.” The team is currently residing in Vatukarasa, where they have received a warm welcome and have relished the local hospitality.

Young player Netani Lesimaimatuku shared that his journey home has been particularly impactful. With family ties to Natokalau Village in Matuku, Lau, he reflected on the distinct contrast between life in Australia and that of his village. Lesimaimatuku also expressed his aspirations in rugby and the hope of representing Fiji on an international level. “It’s always going to be the white jersey for me,” he said, emphasizing his pride in his heritage.

The Coral Coast 7s tournament, which runs from January 16 to 18, provides the SunnyBank Dragons with a significant platform not only to compete but to understand and engage with their cultural identity. Such experiences foster a deeper connection among the players, which can positively influence their performance on the field.

Moreover, the ongoing preparations of the Dominion Brothers Youth rugby team for the same tournament highlight a shared spirit among young players in Fiji. They, too, see rugby as a transformative tool for personal development and community support, echoing sentiments of hope and opportunity through sports.

Combining both narratives showcases the broader potential of rugby as a powerful medium for connection, growth, and opportunity for young athletes, both locally and internationally. This intersection of cultural exchange through sports is a hopeful reminder of the broader impact that rugby can have on the lives of young individuals, strengthening community bonds and personal aspirations.
