Collaborative efforts by the Australian and Japanese governments have advanced the Nadi River Flood Alleviation Project. Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad announced in Parliament that the government has received the final technical report from the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility Programme (AIFFP), a key development for this essential long-term initiative.
“This project is significant and will require considerable resources,” Professor Prasad stated. He emphasized the importance of seeking additional grant financing for the venture. With the completion of the technical report and the ongoing support from the Japanese Government, he is optimistic about moving forward quickly.
The Minister also highlighted the allocation of funding to enhance drainage systems, which aims to mitigate the effects of flooding experienced in previous years. In the 2024-2025 Budget, extra resources have been earmarked for various ministries, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways and the Ministry of Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs. Prasad noted that drainage improvements outside town boundaries play a crucial role in managing heavy rainfall and cyclones.
He concluded by stating that these drainage efforts are already yielding positive results, benefiting towns and cities alike.
