Double Delight: A Teaching Couple’s Journey to Graduation Success

Shalvin Kumar and Sheema Lata, a teaching couple at the University of the South Pacific, recently celebrated dual achievements at a graduation ceremony in Suva. Mr. Kumar, 29, earned his Bachelor of Arts in Law, while Ms. Lata, 26, completed her Master of Arts in Education. Their journey together over seven years of marriage highlights their belief in lifelong learning.

Mr. Kumar expressed gratitude for his wife’s support, noting that while they both work as English teachers at Seaqaqa Central College, she took on more household responsibilities to give him time to focus on his law studies. The couple engaged in online learning, which posed challenges as they balanced work and education, but they believe the sacrifices made were worthwhile.

Despite facing skepticism regarding his pursuit of a law degree, Mr. Kumar remained focused on his aspirations. He previously held a Bachelor of Arts and a Graduate Certificate in Education, majoring in Literature, Language, and Geography. His long-standing dream to become a lawyer was initially deferred due to a lack of available scholarships, prompting him to pursue education instead. Once he began earning, he decided to enroll in law school, undeterred by critics.

Mr. Kumar is now determined to advance his education further by pursuing a master’s degree in law, while Ms. Lata plans to relocate to Dubai for teaching opportunities. Mr. Kumar aspires to practice as a criminal lawyer, illustrating his commitment to following his dreams.
