The Dominion Brothers Youth rugby team is making significant preparations for the upcoming McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s tournament, taking place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Team manager Manasa Moto emphasized the importance of this event as a vital opportunity for the young players to gain exposure and showcase their skills in a competitive environment.
As the team enters its second week of training, Moto expressed optimism regarding the players’ readiness, stating they understand the expectations placed on them. However, the team faces several challenges, including transportation and food logistics, along with a lack of sponsorship. Despite these hurdles, the resilience and determination of the players are commendable, bolstered by the support from senior players currently overseas who contribute funds to assist their younger counterparts.
The team’s goal is clear: to advance to the Cup final and defend their title. For many players, rugby is not only a sport but also a pathway to personal growth and financial stability, especially for those who have left school. Moto noted, “Rugby is an avenue that can help these players earn a living and support their families,” illustrating the game’s profound impact on the lives of these young athletes.
Training focuses on instilling discipline, improving fitness, and mastering the evolving rules of sevens rugby. The Dominion Brothers are set to compete in Pool A against notable opponents such as Tuva Youth, Pacific Nomads, and Nauru rugby.
As the tournament approaches, Moto has called upon local families and community members to rally behind the team, emphasizing the sense of unity that sports can foster. This event not only represents a competitive opportunity for the players but also serves as a celebration of community spirit and teamwork.
The Dominion Brothers’ journey exemplifies the transformative power of sports in shaping young lives, offering them a hopeful future in rugby and beyond. By focusing on character development, resilience, and community support, the team is laying a strong foundation for the next generation of rugby stars in Fiji.
