In celebration of Deepavali (Diwali), Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of rekindling the values of truth, justice, and righteousness to enhance the nation’s future.

In his Diwali address, Prasad, who also leads the National Federation Party, reminded the audience not to take their freedoms for granted, highlighting the restoration of rights following the Coalition Government’s election in December 2022. He drew parallels between the government’s commitment to uphold these rights and the principles exemplified by Lord Ram after defeating evil in Ayodhya.

Prasad articulated the significance of Diwali in everyday life, citing Lord Ram’s 14-year exile and eventual return as a metaphor for establishing a just and accountable government—what he termed “Ram Rajya”. He acknowledged the Coalition Government’s efforts to reset the nation’s moral compass after a prolonged period of dictatorship, albeit with some missteps.

He reaffirmed that the government’s focus is on meaningful solutions that prioritize the well-being of the people, reflecting Lord Ram’s teachings of putting others before oneself. Prasad conveyed that the sacrifices made for long-term progress are essential and that the Coalition Government is committed to collaboration and consensus-building as pathways to address the country’s challenges.

This message serves not only as a reminder of the cultural significance of Diwali but also as an optimistic reflection on Fiji’s political landscape. As the Coalition Government strives to embody the values of honesty and accountability, there remains hope for a brighter and more equitable future for all citizens. The spirit of Diwali encourages unity and perseverance in the pursuit of sustainable governance.
