Diwali Disappointment: Rubbish Piles Spoil the Festivities in Suva

Many Hindus residing along Caubati Road in Suva expressed their disappointment over having to celebrate Diwali in the midst of significant rubbish piles outside their homes. Deepak Satish Chandra voiced frustration towards the Nasinu Town Council for not keeping its promise to clear the waste ahead of the festivities.

Mr. Chandra pointed out that the presence of unsightly trash was particularly disheartening for families anticipating visitors during Diwali. He stressed that cleanliness is vital during this festival, sharing that residents had made efforts to tidy their own properties. “It’s because of our Lord that we must clean everything so that the spirit will come here,” he mentioned, highlighting the contrast between individual efforts and the neglected state of public areas.

The situation has been further complicated by a lack of communication and accountability, with residents receiving mixed messages from the Nasinu Town Council and the Suva City Council regarding waste removal responsibilities. Despite promises of timely action, no collection has occurred, leading some residents to resort to burning rubbish, a practice that raises safety concerns.

“I just want the council to please clean it up now that Diwali is here,” Mr. Chandra pleaded, expressing hope that the situation would improve before the celebrations gathered full momentum.

As the community prepares to celebrate, there is an opportunity for local authorities to respond to these concerns, showing their commitment to supporting citizens and enhancing the festive spirit. Addressing these issues not only ensures a cleaner environment but also fosters a sense of community pride and togetherness during such a significant time.

In summary, while the residents are currently faced with logistical challenges, there is optimism that the council will take swift action to restore cleanliness in time for this important celebration.
