The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) is encouraging local communities to take advantage of the impressive discounts available during Diwali while also reminding them to consider the needs of the underprivileged. President Dr. Ram Raju emphasized that this festival is vital in showcasing the multicultural and multi-religious fabric of Fijian society.

Businesses see a surge in activity during this festive time, leading to significant savings for consumers on a wide range of household products. Dr. Raju noted that Diwali is not just a date on the calendar; it’s a dynamic celebration that all citizens embrace, highlighting Fiji’s unique identity.

Celebrated prominently in Fiji and around the world, Diwali spans five days, culminating in a grand celebration characterized by sharing sweets, snacks, and vegetarian meals with friends, family, and even strangers. This festival symbolizes life, prosperity, and well-being. Participants exchange wishes for peace, harmony, and goodwill, which reinforces community bonds and cultural tolerance.

Dr. Raju also mentioned the historical significance of Diwali, reflecting the enduring legacy of the Indenture System, which brought over 60,000 Indian laborers to Fiji between 1879 and 1916. With 2023 marking 50 years since Diwali was declared a public holiday in Fiji, recent developments from the Coalition Government, led by Sitiveni Rabuka, further underline this significance by designating Girmit a public holiday.

This year’s celebrations offer a dual occasion for reflection on cultural heritage and togetherness, reinforcing hope for continued unity and prosperity within the diverse community of Fiji.

In summary, Diwali serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural traditions and the necessity of lifting each other up, particularly those in need, while celebrating the shared joys of life and community.
