Stirling Castle, an architectural gem in Levuka Town, holds significant historical value. Perched on Mission Hill and overlooking the picturesque Levuka Passage, this luxury mansion was constructed in 1880 by the Schneider family, prominent German settlers of the era.
Currently, the castle is operated as a charming bed and breakfast called The Lookout, managed by Alice Tamani, who moved to Fiji from Brisbane, Australia, after marrying her Fijian husband. Alice has fallen in love with Levuka, feeling increasingly connected to the community and its history. “Every time I came to Levuka, it got into my heart a little more,” she shared, reflecting on the warm acceptance she experienced from locals.
The home, which had seen better days upon Alice’s arrival in November 2023, retains breathtaking views of the South Seas and the misty Lovoni mountains. The previous owner, Duncan Creighton, a Scottish philanthropist, dedicated significant energy to documenting and preserving the property’s history through his photography and care. He believed in the importance of keeping the home intact for future generations and gifted it to the Levuka Historical Society for preservation.
Over the years, Stirling Castle has had few owners; following the Schneiders, John Sword, an engineer and shipwright, bought it in 1915 and kept it until 1990. Alice is committed to preserving the memories and artifacts of these previous owners while enhancing the charm with modern comforts—she has fitted the establishment with air conditioning and Wi-Fi, but maintains its historic essence.
In Alice’s stewardship, The Lookout has become a beautiful representation of Levuka’s colonial history. Visitors can engage with the past through its preserved garden, antique furnishings, and the tranquil atmosphere that promotes connection over modern distractions. Alice expressed the hope that everyone who visits feels a part of the history and beauty surrounding them.
As Levuka continues its journey towards recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site, efforts like Alice’s to maintain its colonial heritage and sense of community reflect a broader commitment to preserving Fiji’s cultural narratives.
