The former Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Lynda Tabuya, will receive an update regarding her standing within the People’s Alliance (PA) party in the upcoming three weeks. This determination follows a meeting held by the party’s executive committee at their headquarters in Suva, which was convened to formalize her disciplinary hearing.
This marks the second time Ms. Tabuya has come under review for disciplinary actions within the party. Earlier this year in February, she faced allegations tied to a scandal involving a fellow minister, which resulted in her removal from the role of deputy leader. In March, the party characterized the scandal and its allegations as “potentially irreparable damage” to its reputation.
Currently, Ms. Tabuya’s situation is exacerbated by a leaked explicit video that surfaced on Christmas Eve, wherein she is seen dancing nude, a video she has acknowledged as legitimate. She stated that the footage was originally intended for her ex-husband, Robert Semaan, from whom she divorced in 2016, as highlighted in a FICAC investigation. Subsequently, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka dismissed her from her ministerial position on December 26. During the executive committee meeting, Mr. Rabuka participated virtually from Savusavu.
The PA’s general secretary, Sila Balawa, reiterated that the disciplinary process will adhere to the party’s constitution. He mentioned that the disciplinary committee has 21 days to report their findings and recommendations, emphasizing the importance of maintaining an independent process to safeguard its integrity and confidentiality. Lynda Tabuya will have the chance to present her side during this review, with Mr. Balawa noting the committee’s commitment to hear all perspectives before concluding.
While the specifics about the current members of the disciplinary committee have not been revealed, the previous committee included notable figures such as Minister for Lands Filimoni Vosarogo.
