Diplomacy Beyond Borders: A Lesson in Connection and Care

British High Commissioner to Fiji, Dr. Brian Jones, emphasized that diplomacy extends beyond significant actions; it is fundamentally about how we make others feel. He made these remarks while honoring 16 graduates of the Basic Diplomacy Training program in Suva.

The program, which lasted eight months, included participants from various sectors. Dr. Jones expressed his admiration for the graduates’ commitment to self-improvement and their willingness to dedicate their weekends to this educational endeavor.

He underscored the importance of practicing diplomacy in all areas of life. “Whether sitting across from someone at a negotiating table, interviewing in court, teaching, or conversing in a medical setting, the objective is to ensure that the other person leaves the interaction feeling better,” Dr. Jones noted. He asserted that this approach leads to success in any career.

Dr. Jones reflected on his own experiences as a diplomat, representing King Charles in a foreign nation, and highlighted the significance of creating positive impressions during interactions. He stated that it is not solely academic ability that fosters success but rather the dedication to personal development and serving as a role model, whether in government, business, or international relations, and contributing to national strength.
