To understand the factors influencing dining choices, 20 individuals from diverse backgrounds were interviewed. The survey focused on various aspects such as the types of restaurants available, customer satisfaction levels, and experiences of poor service, alongside the emphasis on value for money.
Many respondents expressed concerns about receiving adequate value for their expenditures, primarily due to issues with food quality and safety. Aarti Mala, a library manager, highlighted the rising cost of daily items and emphasized her expectation of food services adhering to the Food Safety Act of 2003.
Despite inflation, a considerable number of people reported dining out regularly, often for lunch, showcasing a trend particularly prevalent among working professionals. However, consumers remain discerning, considering aspects such as menu options, food quality, and cleanliness before choosing where to eat.
Feedback from participants underscored the significance of hygiene, with some even opting to leave restaurants after witnessing inadequate sanitary conditions. Concerns were reiterated by multiple respondents who had experienced poor service due to inappropriate food handling, leading to a 20% incidence of meal returns for dissatisfaction.
The Consumer Council of Fiji reported a concerning number of food safety complaints, recording 341 issues related to food quality and hygiene in 2023 alone. CEO Seema Shandil emphasized that regular inspections and collaboration with health authorities aim to uphold food safety standards. The Council is proactive in ensuring compliance, issuing warnings, and addressing repeat offenses.
The Fiji Ministry of Health plays a crucial role in enforcing food safety regulations. Recent reports indicate that 11 food establishments have faced legal action this year for non-compliance.
