Dignity Facility Revolutionizes Conditions for Recycling Heroes

Nearly one hundred Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) at the Maururu Dumpsite in Ba marked the official opening of a new Dignity Facility yesterday. This facility, which includes a portable washroom and break-room, was introduced by the Pacific Recycling Foundation in collaboration with GlobalGiving, the R C Manubhai Group of Companies, and Ba Town Council.

This support structure is critical for CPR, who for decades have collected recyclables for their daily survival without access to basic amenities such as water, washrooms, and clean spaces for meals or rest. These dedicated workers, including women, LGBTQI+ community members, and men from marginalized communities, face significant stigma while playing a crucial role in addressing the country’s waste crisis, extending the dumpsite’s lifespan, and reducing carbon emissions.

The initiative follows the success of a similar facility launched at the Vunato Dumpsite last year, reflecting PRF’s commitment to enhancing the working and living conditions of CPR communities.

Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, highlighted that despite their vital contributions, CPR has been undervalued, unrecognized, and poorly compensated. He emphasized that these workers deserve essential services, support from stakeholders including the government and municipalities, and recognition as essential workers with accompanying allowances and health benefits.

“This Dignity Facility in Ba is more than infrastructure; it represents respect and recognition for the invaluable work these individuals perform daily. Our goal is to provide them with the dignity they deserve and to encourage other stakeholders to join us in this mission,” said Deo.

Rachel Smith, Vice President of Global Community Programs and Partnerships at GlobalGiving, highlighted the significance of this project, noting the enduring partnership between Ford Philanthropy and GlobalGiving, which focuses on empowering communities through education, entrepreneurship, and essential services.

Deo also expressed gratitude to support partners such as Rooster Chicken, Vivid Media, and RB Patel Group Limited for their collaboration with PRF for the event.
