Diabetes Fiji’s Call to Combat Cultural Stigma and Support Youth Mental Health

Some teenagers facing a lack of acceptance and support from their families are struggling with thoughts of suicide, according to Marawa Kini, acting executive officer of Diabetes Fiji.

One of the main challenges the organization encounters is addressing the cultural beliefs, customs, and stigma that prevent young people from receiving the necessary support.

Mr. Kini emphasized that Diabetes Fiji is dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders, civil society organizations, NGOs, government entities, faith-based groups, and the media to tackle these issues. He urged the government to invest more in public health programs initiated by Diabetes Fiji and has appealed to regional and international organizations for support in their efforts.

“If we do not address the challenges posed by diabetes, we will see a growing number of Fijians needing hospitalization,” Mr. Kini warned.

Diabetes Fiji previously submitted a proposal to be considered in the 2024-25 National Budget; however, they did not receive any funding from the government.

“As a charitable organization, we are always ready to welcome any support, whether in kind or financial, from generous donors to continue our vital work,” he stated.

Mr. Kini expressed gratitude to parents who are committed to caring for their children and mentioned that Diabetes Fiji offers programs aimed at supporting parents through training and advocacy.
