A double-storey building in Naidovi, Cuvu, Nadroga, outside the Sigatoka Fire Boundary, was completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The National Fire Authority’s CEO, Puamau Sowani, confirmed that the Sigatoka Fire Station received an emergency call around 2:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the building engulfed in flames. They quickly took action to prevent the fire from spreading further and were able to control the situation efficiently. The fire brigade continued to tackle hotspots until they successfully extinguished the blaze, with assistance from the Korolevu fire team.
The building, owned by 69-year-old Hari Shankar, included a shopping complex with four ground-floor shops, one of which was a kava shop, while the upper floor housed a nightclub and the owner’s apartment. At the time of the incident, Shankar and his wife were awakened by their son-in-law, Rohit Chand, who alerted them to the danger.
Tragically, the fire caused complete destruction of the top floor, with an estimated damage cost of $750,000. Mr. Sowani mentioned that a fire investigation is underway to determine the suspected cause of the blaze.
In light of this incident, Mr. Sowani urged the public to remain vigilant and ensure their homes are fire-safe to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
