Ana Yabakivou, an 18-year-old who dropped out of Year 12, has demonstrated remarkable resilience by graduating with a Certificate IV in Organic Agriculture from the Naleba Training Centre in Labasa. She was one of 34 students to achieve this milestone.
Facing the setback of failing the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination (FY12CE) last year, Ms. Yabakivou seized the opportunity to enroll at the Naleba Training Centre this year. She remains optimistic about her future, expressing a strong desire to pursue further studies at the Fiji National University (FNU) Koronivia campus or the University of the South Pacific to enhance her agricultural knowledge.
Despite her academic challenges, Ms. Yabakivou maintained her determination to succeed. “I have a simple dream: to get a job and look after my family, meeting their financial needs,” she shared. To commemorate her graduation, she invited her grandmother to the ceremony, highlighting the importance of family support in her journey.
Her grandmother, Anasimeci Solokai, 67, attended the graduation and expressed overwhelming pride in her granddaughter’s accomplishments. “Nothing is impossible if a student has family support and the determination to achieve their goal,” she emphasized in a moment of heartfelt emotion.
Ms. Yabakivou, who hails from Nabubu Village in the Macuata District, faced challenges while adjusting to life in the center’s girls’ dormitory, often feeling lonely and missing her family. However, she overcame these difficulties and successfully graduated. She encourages others who may be feeling disheartened to persevere, stating, “There are plenty of opportunities to climb up in life.”
This story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of determination and support systems in overcoming adversity. Ms. Yabakivou’s journey is an inspiring example of how one can rise above challenges and work towards their dreams with tenacity and hope.
In summary, Ana Yabakivou’s journey reflects resilience and determination. With the support of her family and community, she has set her sights on a promising future in agriculture, showcasing that perseverance is key to achieving one’s goals despite obstacles.
